Muhammad bin Qais narrates: I heard Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) saying: Shall I tell you about an incident between me and the Prophet (peace be upon him)? We said: Yes. Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: It was my allotted night. The Prophet (peace be upon him) got up, placed his shoes by his feet, put on his cloak, and spread the edge of his lower garment on the bed. After a little while, when he thought I had fallen asleep, he quietly put on his shoes, quietly took his cloak, opened the door, then went outside and walked away quietly. I put my cloak over my head and followed him. The Prophet (peace be upon him) went to Jannat al-Baqi’. He raised both his hands three times and stood there for a long time. When he turned back, I also turned back. He walked quickly, so I also walked quickly. He walked even faster, so I also increased my speed. He returned, so I also returned. I reached home before him and entered the house. I had just lain down when he also entered the house. The Prophet (peace be upon him) asked: Aisha, what happened to you? I said: Nothing. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Either you tell me, or the One who is All-Pleasant and All-Knowing will inform me. I said: O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), may my parents be sacrificed for you, then I told him the whole incident. Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: So you were that figure I saw ahead of me? I said: Yes. Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: The Prophet (peace be upon him) struck his hand on my chest, and I felt its pain. He said: Did you think that Allah and His Messenger would wrong you? Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: I said: There are many things that people hide, but Allah knows them. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Jibreel came to me at that time when you saw (me leave). He did not enter because you had removed your cloak. He called me, and I kept this hidden from you, and I responded to him while keeping it hidden from you. I thought you had fallen asleep, and I did not think it appropriate to wake you. I feared you might feel uneasy with me (i.e., get frightened). Jibreel told me: Go to the people of Baqi’ and pray for their forgiveness. (Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates:) I said: O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), how should I do that? The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: You should say: “Peace be upon you, O inhabitants of the abode of the believers and Muslims. May Allah have mercy on those of us who have gone ahead and those who come later. If Allah wills, we shall join you.”
