Khalid bin Sameer narrates: Abdullah bin Rawaha Al-Ansari came to us; the Ansar considered him a jurist. I came to him, and people had gathered around him. He said: The rider of the Prophet (ﷺ), our master Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him), narrated this hadith to us. He said: The Prophet (ﷺ) dispatched an army under the command of an emir. He said: Zaid bin Harithah will be your commander; if Zaid is martyred, then Ja’far will be; if Ja’far is martyred, then Abdullah bin Rawaha will be. Our master Ja’far (may Allah be pleased with him) submitted: May my parents be sacrificed for you, O Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), I do not like that you appoint Zaid as commander over me. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: Leave it, for you do not know in which matter there is more goodness. Then those people set out, and as much time passed as Allah willed. Then one day the Prophet (ﷺ) ascended the pulpit and ordered that people be gathered. Then he said: Shall I not inform you about your army who participated in the battle? They went, and when they faced the enemy, Zaid was martyred; so pray for his forgiveness. The people prayed for his forgiveness. Then Ja’far bin Abi Talib took the flag and attacked the enemy fiercely until he too was martyred; so pray for his forgiveness. Then Abdullah bin Rawaha took the flag; his feet remained firm until he too was martyred; so pray for his forgiveness. Then Khalid bin Walid took the flag; he was not appointed as commander, but he became the commander himself. Then the Prophet (ﷺ) raised both his hands and prayed: “O Allah! He is one of Your swords, so help him.” (The narrator says) From that day, Khalid was given the title “Sword of Allah.”
(Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) From the mention of our master Abu Ubaidah bin Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him) up to here, these are those people who were martyred or passed away during the lifetime of the Prophet (ﷺ), before Allah transferred the soul of the Prophet (ﷺ) to His Paradise. Now, after this, we will mention those emigrants from the Quraysh whose virtues are reported in authentic narrations, and after that, we will mention the Ansar, if Allah makes it easy and facilitates it.
