أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِِسْحَاقَ بْنِ إِِبْرَاهِيمَ مَوْلَى ثَقِيفٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى بْنِ سَعِيدٍ الأُمَوِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي ، عَنِ ابْنِ إِِسْحَاقَ ، حَدَّثَنِي يَحْيَى بْنُ عَبَّادِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ جَدِّهِ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، يَقُولُ وَقَدْ كَانَ النَّاسُ انْهَزَمُوا عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ حَتَّى انْتَهَى بَعْضُهُمْ إِِلَى دُونِ الأَعْرَاضِ عَلَى جَبَلٍ بِنَاحِيَةِ الْمَدِينَةِ ، ثُمَّ رَجَعُوا إِِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَقَدْ كَانَ حَنْظَلَةُ بْنُ أَبِي عَامِرٍ الْتَقَى هُوَ وَأَبُو سُفْيَانَ بْنُ حَرْبٍ ، فَلَمَّا اسْتَعْلاهُ حَنْظَلَةُ رَآهُ شَدَّادُ بْنُ الأَسْوَدِ ، فَعَلاهُ شَدَّادٌ بِالسَّيْفِ حَتَّى قَتَلَهُ ، وَقَدْ كَادَ يَقْتُلُ أَبَا سُفْيَانَ ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِِنَّ صَاحِبَكُمْ حَنْظَلَةَ تُغَسِّلُهُ الْمَلائِكَةُ ، فَسَلُوا صَاحِبَتَهُ " ، فَقَالَتْ : خَرَجَ وَهُوَ جُنُبٌ لَمَّا سَمِعَ الْهَائِعَةَ ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " فَذَاكَ قَدْ غَسَّلَتْهُ الْمَلائِكَةُ " .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Zubair (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: I heard the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: This was at a time when people had retreated from the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), to the extent that some of them had gone to the other side of the mountain towards the part of Madinah (i.e., they had withdrawn from the battlefield). Then those people returned to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) at the time when there was a duel between Sayyiduna Hanzalah bin Abi Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sufyan bin Harb. When Sayyiduna Hanzalah (may Allah be pleased with him) began to overpower him, Shaddad bin Aswad saw him. Shaddad came at him with a sword until he martyred him, even though at that moment Hanzalah was about to kill Abu Sufyan. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: Your companion Hanzalah has been washed by the angels. Ask his wife, so the woman said: When he left, he was in a state of janabah (major ritual impurity) because he had heard the call to battle (so he left without bathing). The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: That is why the angels washed him.
