Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: My uncle, Sayyiduna Anas bin Nadr (may Allah be pleased with him), after whom I was named, could not participate in the Battle of Badr with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). This was very hard on him. He said: I did not participate in the very first battle that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) fought. By Allah, if Allah gives me the opportunity to participate in any battle with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), then Allah will surely show what I will do. The narrator says: After that, he did not try to say anything else except this. Then, the following year, he participated in the Battle of Uhud with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Mu’adh (may Allah be pleased with him) came before him and said: O Abu Amr, where are you headed? He replied: I can smell the fragrance of Paradise from the other side of Uhud. Then he participated in the battle until he was martyred. There were more than eighty (80) marks of sword, spear, and arrow wounds on his body. My paternal aunt said: I recognized my brother only by the tips of his fingers. The narrator states: Regarding this, the following verse was revealed: “Among the believers are men who have been true to their covenant with Allah; some of them have fulfilled their vow, and some are still waiting, but they have not changed in the least.”
