Hadith 701

أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ قَحْطَبَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ وَهُوَ غُنْدَرٌ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ قَتَادَةَ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ مُطَرِّفًا ، يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، قَالَ : انْتَهَيْتُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَهُوَ يَقْرَأُ : أَلْهَاكُمُ التَّكَاثُرُ سورة التكاثر آية 1 ، قَالَ : " يَقُولُ ابْنُ آدَمَ : مَا لِي مَا لِي ، وَإِنَّمَا لَكَ مِنْ مَالِكَ مَا أَكَلْتَ فَأَفْنَيْتَ ، أَوْ لَبِسْتَ فَأَبْلَيْتَ ، أَوْ تَصَدَّقْتَ فَأَمْضَيْتَ " .
He narrates from his father: I presented myself before the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) while he was reciting this verse: "Rivalry in worldly increase distracts you." The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: The son of Adam says: This is my wealth, this is my wealth, whereas your wealth is only that which you consume and finish, or that which you wear and wear out, or that which you give in charity and send ahead.
