Mus'ab narrates from his father, Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him): Four verses were revealed about me. I obtained a sword and brought it to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). I said, "O Messenger of Allah! Please grant it to me as a voluntary gift." The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "Put it down." I again said, "O Messenger of Allah! Grant it to me as a voluntary gift and consider me like a person who does not have prosperity (i.e., give it to me considering me poor)." The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "Put it where you took it from." Regarding this, the verse was revealed: "They ask you about the spoils of war (Anfal)."
Once, an Ansari man prepared food and gave us drink; we drank wine until we started fighting among ourselves. The Ansar and the Quraysh began to boast in front of each other. The Ansar said, "We have more virtue than you." The Quraysh said, "We have more virtue." A man from the Ansar took a piece of meat and struck it on the nose of Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) and broke it, so Sayyiduna Sa'd's nose was broken. Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) states: Regarding this, the verse was revealed: "Indeed, wine, gambling, idols, and divining arrows are impure, from the work of Satan, so avoid them so that you may be successful."
Once, Umm Sa'd said: "Has Allah not commanded to do good? By Allah! I will not eat food nor drink anything until I die or you (refuse Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)." The narrator states: When people tried to feed her, they would forcibly open her mouth. Regarding this, the verse was revealed: "We have enjoined upon man to be good to his parents."
Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) states: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came to me when I was ill; he came to visit me. I said, "O Messenger of Allah! Should I bequeath all my wealth?" The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "No." I asked, "Should I bequeath two-thirds?" The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "No." I said, "Should I bequeath half?" The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "No." I said, "Should I bequeath one-third?" Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) remained silent.
