Lady Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) stated that on the day of the Battle of Uhud, when people retreated from the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), I was the first person who came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). I saw a man who was present in front of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); he was participating in the fight on behalf of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and trying to protect him. So I said twice: "You are Talha, may my parents be sacrificed for you." Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I saw a person behind me who was like a bird; in a short while, he reached me, and he was Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah bin Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him). Then we both came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Sayyiduna Talha (may Allah be pleased with him) was fighting in front of him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Take care of your brother, who has made Paradise obligatory for himself." Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: An arrow had struck the face and cheek of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). I intended to remove the arrow from the face of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), but Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah (may Allah be pleased with him) said to me: "I beseech you by Allah, leave this task for me." So I left it for him. Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah (may Allah be pleased with him) caught the arrow with his mouth and tried to pull it out; he disliked that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) should suffer any pain. Then he pulled it out with his mouth. Then I moved towards the other arrow, which was stuck in the cheek of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), to remove it. Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Abu Bakr, I beseech you by Allah, leave this for me." So he also caught that arrow with his mouth and tried to pull it out; he disliked causing any pain to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Then he pulled it out. Sayyiduna Talha (may Allah be pleased with him) was more wounded than the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) (or he participated more in the fight), while the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was more severely affected. Sayyiduna Talha (may Allah be pleased with him) received more than thirty wounds from spears, swords, and arrows that day.
