Imam Sha’bi narrates: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) received the news—while he was present at his lands—that Sayyiduna Imam Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) was about to set out towards Iraq. So he traveled for two or three days and came to Sayyiduna Imam Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) and asked: Where do you intend to go? He replied: These are the letters from the people of Iraq and their pledges of allegiance (regarding these letters). So Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Do not do this. But Sayyiduna Imam Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) did not accept this advice. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said to him: Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) came to the service of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and gave him the choice between this world and the Hereafter, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) chose the Hereafter; he did not desire this world. You are a piece of the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) flesh, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would desire the same thing from you (that you do not turn towards the world). But Sayyiduna Imam Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) did not accept this advice. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) embraced him and said: I entrust you to Allah. And peace be upon you.
