أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سَلْمٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا حَرْمَلَةُ بْنُ يَحْيَى ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ ، أَخْبَرَنِي عَمْرُو بْنُ الْحَارِثِ وَذَكَرَ ابْنُ سَلْمٍ آخَرَ مَعَهُ ، عَنْ بُكَيْرِ بْنِ الأَشَجِّ ، عَنْ بُسْرِ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ ، أَنَّ عُبَيْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ أَبِي رَافِعٍ مَوْلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، حَدَّثَهُ أَنَّ الْحَرُورِيَّةَ لَمَّا خَرَجَتْ وَهُوَ مَعَ عَلِيٍّ ، فَقَالُوا : لا حُكْمَ إِِلا لِلَّهِ ، فَقَالَ عَلِيٌّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ : كَلِمَةُ حَقٍّ أُرِيدَ بِهَا بَاطِلٌ ، إِِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَصَفَ أُنَاسًا إِِنِّي لأَعْرِفُ وَصْفَهُمْ فِي هَؤُلاءِ : " يَقُولُونَ الْحَقَّ بِأَلْسِنَتِهِمْ ، لا يَجُوزُ هَذَا مِنْهُمْ وَأَشَارَ إِِلَى حَلْقِهِ ، مِنْ أَبْغَضِ خَلْقِ اللَّهِ إِِلَيْهِ ، فِيهِمْ أَسْوَدُ إِِحْدَى يَدَيْهِ حَلَمَةُ ثَدْيٍ " ، فَلَمَّا قَتَلَهُمْ عَلِيٌّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : انْظُرُوا ، فَنَظَرُوا فَلَمْ يَجِدُوا ، فَقَالَ : ارْجِعُوا ، فَوَاللَّهِ مَا كَذَبْتُ وَلا كُذِبْتُ ، مَرَّتَيْنِ أَوْ ثَلاثًا ، ثُمَّ وَجَدُوهُ فِي خَرِبَةٍ ، فَأَتَوْا بِهِ حَتَّى وَضَعُوهُ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ ، قَالَ عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ : وَأَنَا حَاضِرٌ ذَلِكَ مِنْ أَمْرِهِمْ وَقَوْلِ عَلِيٍّ فِيهِمْ .
Sayyiduna Ubaidullah bin Abu Rafi’ (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When the Haruriyyah (i.e., the Khawarij) appeared, they were with Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). Those people said: Only Allah can be the arbitrator. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The words are true, but by them a false meaning is intended. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) described the appearance of some people, and I am seeing that appearance among these people. These people speak the truth with their tongues (i.e., they recite the Qur’an), but it does not go beyond this. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) pointed to his throat and said: And they are the most hated of Allah’s creation in the sight of Allah. Among them is a black man whose one hand is like a woman’s breast. When Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) killed those people, he said: Examine this matter. When they examined, they did not find that man. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Go back! By Allah, neither have I lied nor has I been lied to. He said this two or perhaps three times. Then such a man was found by those people in a ruin. They brought him until they placed him before Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him).
The narrator named Ubaidullah says: I was present at the incident of these (Khawarij) and at the time of Sayyiduna Ali’s (may Allah be pleased with him) statement about them.
