أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِِسْحَاقَ بْنِ إِِبْرَاهِيمَ مَوْلَى ثَقِيفٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ أَبِي حَازِمٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي حَازِمٍ ، عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : لأُعْطِيَنَّ الرَّايَةَ غَدًا رَجُلا يَفْتَحُ اللَّهُ عَلَى يَدَيْهِ ، قَالَ : فَبَاتَ النَّاسُ لَيْلَتَهُمْ أَيُّهُمْ يُعْطَاهَا ، فَلَمَّا أَصْبَحَ النَّاسُ غَدَوْا عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، كُلُّهُمْ يَرْجُو أَنْ يُعْطَاهَا ، فَقَالَ : أَيْنَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ ؟ قَالُوا : تَشْتَكِي عَيْنَاهُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : فَأَرْسِلُوا إِِلَيْهِ ، فَلَمَّا جَاءَ ، بَصَقَ فِي عَيْنَيْهِ وَدَعَا لَهُ ، فَبَرَأَ حَتَّى كَأَنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ بِهِ وَجَعٌ ، وَأَعْطَاهُ الرَّايَةَ ، فَقَالَ عَلِيٌّ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، أُقَاتِلُهُمْ حَتَّى يَكُونُوا مِثْلَنَا ؟ قَالَ : " انْفُذْ عَلَى رِسْلِكَ حَتَّى تَنْزِلَ بِسَاحَتِهِمْ ، ثُمَّ ادْعُهُمْ إِِلَى الإِِسْلامِ وَأَخْبِرْهُمْ بِمَا يَجِبُ عَلَيْهِمْ مِنْ حَقِّ اللَّهِ فِيهِ ، فَوَاللَّهِ لأَنْ يَهْدِيَ اللَّهُ بِكَ رَجُلا وَاحِدًا خَيْرٌ لَكَ مِنْ أَنْ يَكُونَ لَكَ حُمْرُ النَّعَمِ " .
Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Tomorrow I will give the flag to such a person by whose hand Allah will grant victory.” The narrator says: So the whole night people spent awake, wondering to whom among them it would be given. The next morning, people came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and every person among them was desirous that the flag be given to him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked, “Where is Ali bin Abi Talib?” The people replied, “His eyes are sore, O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Call him.” When he came, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) applied his saliva to his eyes and prayed for him, and he was cured, as if he had never had any ailment. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him the flag. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “O Messenger of Allah! Shall I fight them until they become like us (Muslims)?” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Wait, first descend into their field, then invite them to Islam, and inform them of what is obligatory upon them from the rights of Allah. By Allah! If Allah guides even one person through you, it is better for you than having red camels.”
