Abu Sa'id, who was the freed slave of Sayyiduna Abu Usaid Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him), narrates: He heard Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) when a delegation from Egypt came. Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) welcomed them. When they had heard his commands, they went to the place where Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) was present. Those people said to Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him): "Send for the Noble Qur'an." Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) sent for the Qur'an, so they said to him: "Open the seventh surah." They used to call Surah Yunus the seventh surah. They began reciting until they reached this verse: "Say, 'Have you considered what provision Allah has sent down for you, of which you have made some unlawful and some lawful?' Say, 'Has Allah permitted you [to do so], or do you invent [something] about Allah?'" They said to Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him): "Stop! What do you think? Have you designated any pasture for yourself? Has Allah permitted you to do this, or are you attributing a lie to Allah?"
Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "You people move on. This verse was revealed about such-and-such things. As for the pasture, it is for the camels of charity. When they give birth, the camels of charity will increase, so due to the increase in the camels of charity, I increased the pasture as well. You people move on." So they kept taking one verse after another, and Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) kept saying: "You people move on (or continue), this verse was revealed about such-and-such things." Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) asked them: "What do you people want?" They said: "We want to take a firm covenant from you." The narrator says: So they wrote down conditions for Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) took a covenant from them that they would not break the unity (i.e., the unity of the Muslims) and would not separate from their group as long as Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) fulfilled their conditions. Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) asked them: "What do you people want?" They said: "We want the people of Madinah not to take salaries." Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "This cannot happen, because this wealth is for the one who participated in battle and for the elderly among the companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." The narrator says: So they were satisfied and came with Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) towards Madinah, being content. The narrator says: Then Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up, delivered a sermon, and said: "Beware! Whoever has agricultural land, let him go to his land, and whoever has animals, let him milk them. Beware! None of your wealth is with us. This wealth is for the one who participated in battle and for the elders among the companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." The narrator says: So those people became angry and said: "This is the deception of Banu Umayyah." The narrator says: Then the Egyptians went back. While they were on the way, a rider came before them, then separated from them, then returned to them, then separated from them again, and began to speak ill of them. They asked: "What is your matter? You are under protection. What is your matter?" He said: "I am the messenger of the Commander of the Faithful, going to the governor of Egypt." The narrator says: They searched this person and found a letter with him, written from Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), and it had his seal. It was a letter to the governor of Egypt, instructing him to hang these Egyptians, or have them killed, or have their hands and feet cut off. So they returned, until they reached Madinah. They went to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "Have you seen what this enemy of Allah has written about us? Surely Allah has made his blood lawful. Come with us to him." Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "By Allah! I will not go with you." They said: "Then why did you write a letter to us?" Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "By Allah! I never wrote any letter to you." So they began to look at each other, then one of them said to another: "Do you want to fight for this person (the narrator is unsure, perhaps these are the words), or do you get angry for this person?"
Then Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) got up and went out of Madinah towards a village. Those people got up and came to Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "You wrote such-and-such a letter." Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "There are two possibilities: either you present two men from among the Muslims as witnesses against me, or I swear by the name of Allah, besides whom there is no god, that neither did I write the letter, nor did I dictate it, nor do I have any knowledge of it. You people know that a letter can be written in someone else's name, and a ring can be made to match another ring." They said: "By Allah! Allah has made your blood lawful." Then they broke the covenant and the agreement they had made, and besieged Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him). One day, Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) looked out towards them and said: "As-salamu 'alaykum." (The narrator says:) I did not hear anyone reply to his greeting, except that someone may have replied in his heart. Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I ask you by Allah, do you know that I bought the well named Rumah with my own wealth, and made my bucket like the bucket of any ordinary Muslim (i.e., made its water available to all)?" They said: "Yes." Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Then on what basis do you prevent me from drinking from it, to the extent that I have broken my fast with seawater (i.e., salty water)? I ask you by Allah, do you know that I bought land for such-and-such amount and expanded the mosque?" They replied: "Yes." Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Do you know that before me, anyone was ever prevented from praying in this mosque?" I ask you by Allah, did you not hear the Prophet of Allah mention such-and-such things?" Then Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) mentioned some things about himself and enumerated them. The narrator says: Then I saw him look out at the people a second time, admonished them, and advised them, but no one accepted his admonition. When they heard Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) the first time, they accepted it, but when he repeated it before them, they did not accept it. Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said to his wife: "Open the door." He placed the Mushaf before him. The reason was that he had seen the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in a dream at night, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Tonight you will break your fast with us." Then a man came inside to him, so he said: "Between me and you is the Book of Allah." So the man left and spared Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him). Then another man came inside to him, so Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Between me and you is the Book of Allah." At that time, the Qur'an was placed before him. The narrator says: So that man waved his sword at Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) tried to protect himself with his hand, and the man cut his hand. I do not know whether he cut it completely or partially. Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "By Allah! This was the first hand that wrote the detailed (surahs)."
In another narration besides that of Abu Sa'id, it is stated: A man named Tujaybi entered and stabbed Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) with scissors, as a result of which blood flowed and fell upon this verse: "So Allah will suffice you against them, and He is the Hearing, the Knowing." The mark of blood is present in that Qur'an and has not been erased.
In Abu Sa'id's narration, these words are present: The daughter of Farafsa (perhaps referring to the wife of Sayyiduna Uthman, may Allah be pleased with him) took her jewelry and placed it in her lap. This was before the martyrdom of Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him). When Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) was martyred, she began to weep and wail over him. Someone said: "May Allah destroy her, how large are her hips!" From this, I realized that the enemies of Allah only desire the world.
