Hadith 6917

Amr bin Maymoon narrates: A few days before Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) was wounded, I saw him standing with Sayyiduna Hudhayfah bin Yaman (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Uthman bin Hunaif (may Allah be pleased with him), and he was saying: "Do you not fear that you both have imposed upon this land a burden which it cannot bear?" So both of them said: "We have only imposed upon it what it can bear, and have not made any extra payment obligatory." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "You both should check whether you have imposed upon the land something it cannot bear." They replied: "No." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "If Allah keeps me safe, I will leave for the widows of the people of Iraq such provision that after me they will not need anything else." The narrator says: Three days after this, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was wounded.

Amr bin Maymoon says: When Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was wounded, I was standing that morning, and between me and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was only Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both). When Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) passed between the rows, he stood between the two rows. When he saw a gap among them, he said: "Straighten the rows." When he saw there was no gap, he moved forward and said the takbeer.

The narrator says: Sometimes Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) would recite Surah Yusuf or Surah Nahl in the first rak'ah, until people would gather. The narrator says: He had just said the takbeer when I heard him say: "The dog has killed me" (the narrator is unsure, perhaps these were the words), "The dog has devoured me." This was when he had been wounded. Then that man ran away with the dagger, which was double-edged. Whomever he passed by, whether on the right or left, he wounded, until he had wounded thirteen men, nine of whom died. When one of the Muslims saw this situation, he threw a cloak over him. When that man realized he would be caught, he killed himself. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) took the hand of Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) and brought him forward. Those who were close to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) saw what I saw, but those who were at the far ends of the mosque did not know what had happened; they only noticed that Sayyiduna Umar's (may Allah be pleased with him) voice had stopped, so they began to say "Subhan Allah, Subhan Allah." Then Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman (may Allah be pleased with him) led the people in a brief prayer. When the people finished the prayer, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Ibn Abbas! Find out who has killed me." After a short while, he came and said: "The slave of Sayyiduna Mughirah bin Shu'bah (may Allah be pleased with him)." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "May Allah destroy him! I had ordered him to do good." Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "All praise is due to Allah, who did not make my death at the hands of someone who claims to be a Muslim. You and your father (i.e., Sayyiduna Abbas bin Abdul Muttalib, may Allah be pleased with him) liked that there should be many slaves in Madinah."

(The narrator says:) Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) had the most slaves. Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was carried to his house, and it seemed as if before that day, people had never faced any calamity. Some people said: "We fear for him (that he may be martyred)." Others said: "There is no harm (he will recover)." Then nabidh (a drink) was brought; Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) drank it, but it came out of his wound. Then milk was brought; Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) drank it, but it also came out of his wound. So people realized that he would die. We gathered around him. People came and praised him. A young man came and said: "O Commander of the Faithful! Receive glad tidings from Allah, for you enjoyed the company of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), you were honored to accept Islam at the beginning, and you rendered services (for Islam). Then when you were made caliph, you acted justly, and now you are being granted martyrdom." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O my nephew, I wish that this matter is balanced, that nothing is due against me, nor anything in my favor." When that young man turned to leave, his lower garment was touching the ground. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Call that young man back to me." He said: "O my nephew, raise your garment (above the ground, for in this way your garment will remain clean and you will be counted among the pious in the sight of your Lord)."

"O Abdullah, check how much debt I owe." When people calculated it, it was eighty-six thousand (dirhams). Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "If the wealth of Umar's children can pay it in full, then pay it from their wealth. Otherwise, demand it from Banu Adi bin Ka'b. If their wealth is not enough, then demand it from the Quraysh, but do not demand it from anyone else. Go to Umm al-Mu'mineen Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) and say: 'Umar sends you greetings.' Do not say: 'The Commander of the Faithful sends greetings,' for I am no longer the commander of any believer. Say: 'Umar bin Khattab seeks permission to be buried with his two companions.'" Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) conveyed the greeting and sought permission, and found Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) weeping. Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said to her: "Umar bin Khattab seeks your permission to be buried with his two companions." She said: "By Allah, I intended that place for myself, but today I give him preference over myself." When Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) returned, it was said: "Abdullah has come." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Sit me up." A man supported him. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: "What did Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) say?" Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: "O Commander of the Faithful, she has given you permission, as you wished." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Alhamdulillah, nothing was more important to me than being buried in that place. When I die, convey greetings again and say: 'Umar bin Khattab seeks permission to enter.' If she gives permission, then take me in; if she refuses, then take me to the Muslims' graveyard." Then Umm al-Mu'mineen Sayyidah Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her) came, and other women shielded her. When we saw her, we got up. She stayed with Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) for a while. Then the men asked permission to enter, so the women went into the inner part of the house. Then we heard the sound of the women weeping from inside. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was told: "O Commander of the Faithful, make a bequest and appoint a caliph." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "In my opinion, no one is more deserving of this matter than those persons with whom the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was pleased when he passed away." Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) named Sayyiduna Ali, Sayyiduna Talhah, Sayyiduna Uthman Ghani, Sayyiduna Zubair bin Awwam, Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Awf, and Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with them all). Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) will be with them, but he will have nothing to do with the government." It seemed as if Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) wanted to console Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both). "If the caliphate goes to Sa'd, it will be for him; otherwise, whoever among you is appointed as amir should seek his help. I did not remove him due to any incapacity or treachery."

Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I advise the caliph after me to fear Allah, and I enjoin him to take special care of the first Muhajireen, to recognize their rights and protect their honor. I advise him to do good to the Ansar, who settled in the city and embraced faith before them, that he should accept the good of their good ones and overlook the faults of those who do wrong. I advise him to do good to the people of all regions, for they are the protectors of Islam, the collectors of wealth, and those who show anger to the enemy. Their surplus wealth should only be taken with their consent. I advise him to do good to the Bedouins, for they are the origin of the Arabs and the root of Islam. Their zakat should be taken from their wealth and returned to their poor. I advise him, for the sake of Allah and His Messenger, to fulfill the covenants made in their name, to fight those other than them, and to obligate people only according to their capacity."

When Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) passed away, we carried him. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) greeted and said: "Umar seeks permission to enter." Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "Bring him in." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was taken in and buried with his two companions. When the burial was completed and people returned, these gentlemen gathered. Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Confine your matter to three of you (i.e., three should relinquish their right)." Sayyiduna Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I entrust my matter to Ali." Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I entrust my matter to Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman (may Allah be pleased with him)." Sayyiduna Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I entrust my matter to Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him)." So three remained: Sayyiduna Ali, Sayyiduna Uthman, and Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with them). Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) said to the other two: "Which of you will withdraw from this matter and entrust it to the other, and Allah will be his guardian, and Islam will be his guardian, and he will consider who among you is best in his view and will strive for the good of the Ummah in this matter?"

The narrator says: Both elders, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), remained silent. Then Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Entrust this matter to me, and by Allah, I will not fall short in this matter regarding the best among you." Both replied: "Yes." Then Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) came, and Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "You have the honor of being among the earliest Muslims, and you have kinship with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), as you know. By Allah, it is incumbent upon you that if I make you amir, you will act justly, and if I do not, you will obey (the one who is appointed amir)." Then Uthman came, and he said similar words to Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him). When Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) took this pledge from both, he said to Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him): "Extend your hand." Then he pledged allegiance to Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him). Then Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) pledged allegiance to Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him). Then all the people came in and pledged allegiance to Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him).
