أَخْبَرَنَا عِمْرَانُ بْنُ مُوسَى بْنِ مُجَاشِعٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا زَيْدُ بْنُ الْحُبَابِ ، حَدَّثَنِي مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ صَالِحٍ ، حَدَّثَنِي رَبِيعَةُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ الدِّمَشْقِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ قَيْسٍ ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ النُّعْمَانَ بْنَ بَشِيرٍ ، أَنَّهُ أَرْسَلَهُ مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ بِكِتَابٍ إِِلَى عَائِشَةَ ، فَدَفَعَهُ إِِلَيْهَا ، فَقَالَتْ : أَلا أُحَدِّثُكَ بِحَدِيثٍ سَمِعْتُهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ؟ قُلْتُ : بَلَى ، قَالَتْ : إِِنِّي عِنْدَهُ ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ أَنَا وَحَفْصَةُ ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : لَوْ كَانَ عِنْدَنَا رَجُلٌ يُحَدِّثُنَا ، فَقُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، أَبْعَثُ إِِلَى أَبِي بَكْرٍ يَجِيءُ فَيُحَدِّثُنَا ؟ قَالَتْ : فَسَكَتَ ، فَقَالَتْ حَفْصَةُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، أَبْعَثُ إِِلَى عُمَرَ فَيَجِيءُ فَيُحَدِّثُنَا ؟ قَالَتْ : فَسَكَتَ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَدَعَا رَجُلا ، فَأَسَرَّ إِِلَيْهِ بِشَيْءٍ دُونَنَا ، فَذَهَبَ ، فَجَاءَ عُثْمَانُ ، فَأَقْبَلَ عَلَيْهِ بِوَجْهِهِ ، فَسَمِعْتُهُ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، يَقُولُ : " يَا عُثْمَانُ ، إِِنَّ اللَّهَ لَعَلَّهُ يُقَمِّصُكَ قَمِيصًا ، فَإِِنْ أَرَادُوكَ عَلَى خَلْعِهِ فَلا تَخْلَعْهُ ثَلاثًا " ، قُلْتُ : يَا أُمَّ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ، فَأَيْنَ كُنْتِ عَنْ هَذَا الْحَدِيثِ ؟ قَالَتْ : يَا بُنَيَّ ، أُنْسِيتُهُ ، كَأَنِّي لَمْ أَسْمَعْهُ قَطُّ ، قَالَ أَبُو حَاتِمٍ : هَذَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ قَيْسٍ اللَّخْمِيُّ ، مَاتَ سَنَةَ أَرْبَعٍ وَعِشْرِينَ وَمِائَةٍ ، وَلَيْسَ هَذَا بِعَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي قَيْسٍ صَاحِبِ عَائِشَةَ .
Sayyiduna Nu’man bin Bashir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Sayyiduna Mu’awiyah bin Abu Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with him) sent him to Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) with a letter, so he presented that letter before Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her). Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: Shall I not narrate to you the hadith which I heard from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) himself? I replied: Yes. Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: One day, Hafsah and I were present with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I wish there was someone with whom we could converse. I said: O Messenger of Allah! I will send a message to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him); he will come and converse with us. Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent. Sayyidah Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: O Messenger of Allah! I will send a message to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him); he will come and converse with us. Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called a man and spoke to him in a whisper, the content of which did not reach us, then the man left. Sayyiduna Uthman Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him) came, then that man left, then Sayyiduna Uthman Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him) came, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned towards him. I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: “O Uthman! Indeed, Allah will clothe you with a shirt, and people will wish that you take it off, but do not take it off.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said this three times.
Sayyiduna Nu’man bin Bashir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I said: O Mother of the Believers, why did you not narrate this hadith earlier? So Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: O my son, I had forgotten it as if I had never heard it.
(Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) The narrator named Abdullah bin Qais Lakhmi passed away in 124 Hijri. He is not the same Abdullah bin Abu Qais who was a student of Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her).
Sayyiduna Nu’man bin Bashir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I said: O Mother of the Believers, why did you not narrate this hadith earlier? So Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: O my son, I had forgotten it as if I had never heard it.
