أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِِسْحَاقَ بْنِ إِِبْرَاهِيمَ مَوْلَى ثَقِيفٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا الْوَلِيدُ بْنُ شُجَاعٍ السَّكُونِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا إِِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَبِي حَرْمَلَةَ ، عَنْ عَطَاءٍ ، وَسُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ يَسَارٍ ، وَأَبِي سَلَمَةَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ ، أَنَّ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا ، قَالَتْ : كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مُضْطَجِعًا فِي بَيْتِهِ كَاشِفًا عَنْ فَخِذَيْهِ ، فَاسْتَأْذَنَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ فَأَذِنَ لَهُ وَهُوَ عَلَى تِلْكَ الْحَالِ ، فَتَحَدَّثَ ، ثُمَّ اسْتَأْذَنَ عُمَرُ فَأَذِنَ لَهُ ، وَهُوَ عَلَى تِلْكَ الْحَالِ ، فَتَحَدَّثَ ، ثُمَّ اسْتَأْذَنَ عُثْمَانُ ، فَجَلَسَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَسَوَّى ثِيَابَهُ ، فَدَخَلَ فَتَحَدَّثَ ، فَلَمَّا خَرَجَ ، قَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، دَخَلَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ، فَلَمْ تَهَشَّ لَهُ وَلَمْ تُبَالِ بِهِ ، ثُمَّ دَخَلَ عُمَرُ ، فَلَمْ تَهَشَّ لَهُ وَلَمْ تُبَالِ بِهِ ، ثُمَّ دَخَلَ عُثْمَانُ ، فَجَلَسْتَ فَسَوَّيْتَ ثِيَابَكَ ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " أَلا أَسْتَحِي مِنْ رَجُلٍ تَسْتَحِي مِنْهُ الْمَلائِكَةُ " .
Lady Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was lying in his house with his garment removed from his thighs. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) sought permission to enter. The Prophet (peace be upon him) granted him permission, but he remained in that state. He conversed with the Prophet (peace be upon him). Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) sought permission to enter. The Prophet (peace be upon him) also granted him permission, but he remained in that state. They conversed. Then Sayyiduna Uthman Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him) sought permission to enter. The Prophet (peace be upon him) sat up straight and adjusted his garment. Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) entered and they conversed. When he left, Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) asked: O Messenger of Allah! First Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) came, but you did not move for him nor did you show any special concern. Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came, and you did not move for him nor did you show any special concern. Then Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) came, and you sat up straight and adjusted your garment. The Prophet (peace be upon him) replied: Should I not show modesty before a man before whom even the angels show modesty?
