Lady Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) sought permission to enter upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while I was with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) under a single sheet. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) granted him permission. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) fulfilled his need and remained in the same state under the sheet, then he (Abu Bakr) departed. Then Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) sought permission to enter upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) granted him permission. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) fulfilled his need, but he (peace and blessings be upon him) remained in the same state under the sheet, then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) departed. Then Sayyiduna Uthman Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him) sought permission to enter upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) adjusted his clothes and sat up straight, then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) fulfilled his need, then he (Uthman) departed. Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: I said, "O Messenger of Allah! Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) sought permission to enter upon you, you fulfilled his need but remained in the same state, then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) sought permission to enter upon you, you fulfilled his need but remained in the same state, then Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) sought permission to enter upon you, so you adjusted your clothes and sat up straight." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Aisha! Uthman is a modest man, if I had permitted him in that state, I feared that he would not have expressed his need before me."
