Hadith 6898

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I heard the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Once I was asleep and I saw myself at a well, over which there was a bucket. I drew from it as much water as Allah willed for me to draw. Then Ibn Abi Quhafah (that is, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him) took the bucket from me and drew one or two buckets of water. There was some weakness in his drawing; may Allah forgive his weakness. Then the bucket turned into a large bucket. Then Umar bin Khattab took it, and I have not seen anyone as hardworking among the people as Umar bin Khattab. He drew so much water from it that the people were fully satisfied."

(Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) The dreams of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) are revelation. Allah showed His beloved in a dream that he was present at a well, and in terms of benefit to the Muslims, the well is like the government. Then the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I drew from it as much water as Allah willed for me to draw, then Ibn Abi Quhafah took it from me and drew some buckets (the narrator is in doubt, perhaps these are the words) or two buckets. By this, the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) meant the rule of the Muslims, so the two buckets correspond to the caliphate of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), which lasted two years and some days. Then the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Then Umar bin Khattab took it, so this proves what I have mentioned, because after Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) became the caliph. So, in this Sunnah, there is a clear proof of what we have mentioned.
