Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: When Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was wounded, he came to serve Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). He said: O Commander of the Faithful, glad tidings to you that you accepted Islam with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) at a time when people chose disbelief. You participated in battles with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) at a time when people tried to disgrace the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). When the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) passed away, he was pleased with you, and regarding your caliphate, there was not even any disagreement between two men, and now you are about to die as a martyr. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Repeat what you said. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) repeated his words, so Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The person is mistaken whom you people cause to be mistaken. Whatever white and yellow (i.e., gold and silver) is present on the earth, if it were required as ransom to save from the terror of the Day of Judgment (or the Hereafter), I would give it as ransom.
