Hamzah bin Abdullah narrates from his father (Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar, may Allah be pleased with him): When the illness of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) became severe, he said: Tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer. Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) submitted to him: O Messenger of Allah! Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) is a soft-hearted man; when he stands in your place, due to weeping, he will not be able to make the people hear (the recitation). The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer. Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) repeated her statement, so the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: You are like the women who were with Yusuf (Joseph), tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer.
Ibn Shihab narrates: Abdullah bin Abdullah narrated this statement of Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her): When I repeated this matter before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), I repeated it because I feared that people would feel uneasy with regard to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), because I knew that whoever stood in the place of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), people would take it as a bad omen (uneasiness), so I wished that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) would remove Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) from this matter.
