Sayyiduna Abu Dharr Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Abu Dharr Ghifari! Do you think that having a lot of wealth is prosperity? I said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Then, do you think that having little wealth is poverty? I said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: True prosperity is the prosperity of the heart, and true poverty is the poverty of the heart. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked me about a man from the Quraysh. He said: Do you know so-and-so? I said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: What is your opinion about him and how is he regarded? I said: When he asks for something, it is given to him; when he comes somewhere, he is allowed to enter. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked me about a man from the people of Suffah and said: Do you know so-and-so? I said: No, by Allah, O Messenger of Allah! I do not know him. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) continued to mention his lineage to me until I recognized him, so I said: O Messenger of Allah! Now I have recognized him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: What is your opinion about him and how is he regarded? I said: He is a poor man from the people of Suffah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: He (the poor man) is better than the earth full of people like the other (rich man). I said: O Messenger of Allah! That person was not given any share of what was given to the other. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: If he has been given goodness, then he is more deserving of it, and if it has been withheld from him, then goodness has been granted to him.
