Hadith 6773

أَخْبَرَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ إِِدْرِيسَ الأَنْصَارِيُّ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ أَبِي بَكْرٍ ، عَنْ مَالِكٍ ، عَنْ يُونُسَ بْنِ يُوسُفَ بْنِ حِمَاسٍ ، عَنْ عَمِّهِ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " لَتُتْرَكَنَّ الْمَدِينَةُ عَلَى أَحْسَنِ مَا كَانَتْ ، حَتَّى يَدْخُلَ الْكَلْبُ فَيُغَذِّي عَلَى بَعْضِ سَوَارِي الْمَسْجِدِ ، أَوْ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ " ، قَالُوا : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، فَلِمَنْ تَكُونُ الثِّمَارُ ذَلِكَ الزَّمَانَ ؟ قَالَ : " لِلْعَوَافِي : الطَّيْرِ وَالسِّبَاعِ " .
Sayyiduna Awf bin Malik Ashja'i (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Once the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) came to us, and in his blessed hand was a staff. At that time, some bunches of (dates) were hanging in the mosque, among which was a bunch of inferior quality dates. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) struck that bunch with his staff and said: If the one giving charity had wished, he could have given better quality dates in charity. This person who gave charity will eat inferior quality dates on the Day of Resurrection. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned towards us and said: By Allah! O people of Madinah, you will leave (this Madinah) for the wild beasts. Do you know what is meant by 'Awafi'? We said: Allah and His Messenger know best. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Birds and wild beasts (are meant).
