Sayyiduna Awf bin Malik Ashja'i (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) looked towards the sky and said: "This is the time when knowledge will be taken away." A man from the Ansar, whose name was Labeed bin Ziyad, said to him: "O Messenger of Allah! Will knowledge be taken away even though it has been established and minds have preserved it?" The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "I used to think that you were the most intelligent person among the people of Madinah." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) mentioned that the Jews and Christians had the Book of Allah (yet they still went astray).
The narrator says: Then I met Sayyiduna Shaddad bin Aws (may Allah be pleased with him), so I narrated to him the hadith transmitted by Sayyiduna Awf bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him). He said: "Sayyiduna Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) has spoken the truth. Shall I guide you to the thing which will be the first to be taken away from knowledge? The first thing to be taken away will be humility and submissiveness (khushu' and khudu'), and then you will not find a single person who possesses humility and submissiveness."
