Sayyiduna Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) came riding on a donkey. He seated me behind him, then he said: O Abu Dharr, what do you think if people are afflicted with such severe hunger that you are not even able to get up from your bed to reach the mosque, then what will you do? Sayyiduna Abu Dharr replied: Allah and His Messenger know best. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Then you should protect yourself. Then he said: O Abu Dharr, what do you think if people are struck by such a severe death that the house is with the person, then what will you do? Sayyiduna Abu Dharr replied: Allah and His Messenger know best. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Then you should be patient. (Then he said:) O Abu Dharr, what do you think if people start killing each other until the place of Ahjar Zayt is filled (with blood). (The narrator says:) This is a place in Madinah Munawwarah, then what will you do? Sayyiduna Abu Dharr replied: Allah and His Messenger know best. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Then you should stay in your house and close your door. Sayyiduna Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: What is your opinion if I am still not left alone? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Then go to those with whom you have a connection (i.e., go to your tribe) and stay among them. Sayyiduna Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: Should I take up my weapon? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: In that case, you will become a partner with those people in this matter. If you fear that the flash of the sword will frighten you, then place the edge of your cloak over your face, so that person will bear the burden of his and your sin (who kills you).
