Abu Ubaidah bin Hudhaifah narrates: I was inquiring about the hadith narrated by Sayyiduna ‘Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him). He was present beside me. I did not go to him to ask, then I went to him and inquired. So he informed me: When the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was sent, I disliked him the most. Then I set out until I reached a far-off land near the territory of the Romans. I thought, if I go to this man, if he is a liar, this will not remain hidden from me, and if he is truthful, I will follow him. So I came. When I arrived in Madinah, people started peeking at me. They said: ‘Adi bin Hatim has come. ‘Adi bin Hatim has come. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said to me: O ‘Adi bin Hatim, accept Islam, you will be safe. I said: I have my own religion. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: I know more about your religion than you. He said this two or three times, then he said: Are you not the chief of your people? I replied: Yes. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) asked: Do you not take a quarter of the war booty? I replied: Yes. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: Then this is not permissible for you in your religion. Sayyiduna ‘Adi (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I felt ashamed at this, so the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: O ‘Adi bin Hatim, accept Islam, you will be safe. Then the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: I think (the narrator is unsure, perhaps these are the words), I believe, or as the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: You are not accepting Islam because you see around me people who are needy. Soon, a woman will ride from Hira without anyone’s protection until she performs tawaf of the Ka‘bah, and the treasures of Kisra bin Hurmuz will be opened for us, and wealth will become abundant, until a person will wish that someone would accept his wealth as charity from him.
Sayyiduna ‘Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I saw a woman who rode from Hira without anyone’s protection until she performed tawaf of the Ka‘bah, and I was among the first army that attacked the treasures of Kisra bin Hurmuz in Mada’in, and I swear by the name of Allah that the third thing will also certainly come true which the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) told me.
