Sayyida Umm Zar (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: When the time of death of Sayyiduna Abu Dharr Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) approached, I began to weep. He asked: Why are you crying? I said: Why should I not cry? While you are about to die in a wilderness, and I do not have enough cloth that would suffice for your shroud. So Sayyiduna Abu Dharr Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Do not cry, glad tidings for you, for I heard the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say to some people among whom I was present: (The Prophet said:) One of you will die in a wilderness, but a group of believers will attend his funeral prayer.
(Sayyiduna Abu Dharr Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) said:) Each of those people died in a populated area. Only I am about to die in a wilderness. By Allah! Neither have I lied nor has anyone lied to me. You keep watch on the road. Sayyida Umm Zar said: Now the pilgrims have departed and the roads have been cut off. Sayyiduna Abu Dharr Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Go and check the road. Sayyida Umm Zar (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: I came to the hill, I checked, then I returned to him and began to nurse him. While I was nursing him, suddenly some people arrived there riding their mounts. It seemed as if they were birds. They came and stopped near me. They asked: O bondwoman of Allah, what is your matter? I said to them: A Muslim man is about to die, will you shroud him? They asked: Who is he? I replied: Sayyiduna Abu Dharr. They asked: The one who is the companion of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)? I replied: Yes. Sayyida Umm Zar (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: Then they said: May our parents be sacrificed for him. Then they quickly went to Sayyiduna Abu Dharr Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) and presented themselves to him. Sayyiduna Abu Dharr Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) welcomed them and said: I heard the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say to some people among whom I was present:
“One of you will die in a wilderness, but a group of believers will attend his funeral.”
(Sayyiduna Abu Dharr Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) said:) Each of those people died in a town or among a gathering of people. Only I am about to die in a wilderness. Listen, if I have enough cloth for my shroud or my wife has enough cloth, then only shroud me in my or my wife’s cloth. Listen, I make you witnesses that none among you who is an amir, or an ‘arif, or a barid, or a naqib (i.e., anyone holding any position or rank) should shroud me.
(The narrator says:) There was not a single person among those present who had not held some position. Only one young Ansari was there. He said: O uncle, I will give you the shroud and I will not include that which you have mentioned. I will shroud you in my own sheet and in the two garments I am wearing underneath, which my mother spun for me with her own hands. So that Ansari shrouded Sayyiduna Abu Dharr Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) in the presence of those people. Among those present were Sayyiduna Hajar bin Adbar and Malik bin Ashter. All these people were from Yemen.
