Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates this statement of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): “The mill of Islam will keep turning for 35 years. (The narrator is in doubt, perhaps these are the words) 36 years. If those people are destroyed, then it will be according to the way in which they were destroyed, and if they remain, then their religion will remain for them for seventy years.” (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) This is the narration because of which the people of innovation criticize our Imams, and they say that the hadith scholars belong to the Hashwiyyah sect. They narrate such things which are incorrect in terms of reflection and perception, and the hadith scholars even declare them authentic. Then if they are asked about the description of this thing, they say: We believe in it but we do not explain it.
(Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) By the grace and mercy of Allah, we are not like that, nor are we as we are accused of being. Rather, we say that in all the matters in which the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) addressed his Ummah, there is nothing that cannot be understood, and in his Sunnahs there is no such Sunnah whose meaning cannot be known. Whoever thinks that when a Sunnah is authentically transmitted, it is necessary to narrate it and to have faith in it, even though it is not explained or its meaning is not understood, then such a person is criticizing the Messengerhood. O Allah (only Your help can be sought). However, among the hadiths there are some narrations in which the attributes of Allah Almighty are mentioned, whose reality cannot be described, but it is obligatory for people to have faith in those attributes. According to us, the meaning of this narration is as we have mentioned in our books, that sometimes the Arabs use the name of the whole thing for one of its parts. Similarly, in their idiom, the Arabs use the word ‘end’ for the ‘beginning’ and the word ‘beginning’ for the ‘end’. So the statement of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), “The mill of Islam will keep turning for 35 years (the narrator is in doubt, perhaps these are the words) 36 years,” by this he meant that the government would transfer from Banu Hashim to Banu Umayyah, because at the end of 36 Hijri, the government went to both of them. So when this matter became problematic for Banu Hashim and Banu Umayyah became their partners in the government, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used the word ‘beginning’ for the ‘end’ of the government. Similarly, we have mentioned earlier that in this way each of them became caliph, until in 101 Hijri, Sayyiduna Umar bin Abdul Aziz passed away, so the people pledged allegiance to Yazid bin Abdul Malik. Yazid bin Abdul Malik died in the land of Sham at the place of Balqa on a Friday, which was the 25th of Sha’ban, 105 Hijri, so the people pledged allegiance to Hisham bin Abdul Malik, who was his brother, on the same day. Then Hisham appointed Khalid bin Abdullah Qasri as the governor of Iraq. He deposed Umar bin Hubayrah at the beginning of 106 Hijri, so the callers of Banu Abbas appeared in Khurasan. They pledged allegiance to Sulayman bin Kathir Khuzai, who was the one inviting towards Banu Hashim. He set out towards Makkah in 106 Hijri, so the people pledged allegiance to him for Banu Hashim. In this way, the government of Banu Umayyah became corrupt and Banu Hashim again became their partners in it, so the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used the word ‘beginning’ for the ‘end’ of their government. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: If they remain, then their religion will remain for them for seventy years. By this, he meant the situation they were in before that.
