Hadith 6644

Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When those people returned from performing ‘Umrah at Ji‘ranah towards Madinah, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) as the leader of Hajj. We went along with him, until when we reached the place of ‘Arj, the call for the Fajr prayer was given. When Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up to say the takbir, he heard the sound of a she-camel behind his back. He stopped from saying the takbir. He said: This is the distinct sound of the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) she-camel, Jad‘a. Perhaps the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is arriving, so we will pray behind him. But it was Sayyiduna ‘Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) who was riding that she-camel. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) asked him: Have you come as a leader or as a messenger? He replied: No, rather I have come as a messenger. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has sent me with the declaration of disassociation (Bara’ah), which I will recite before the people at the time of Hajj.

(The narrator says:) Then we reached Makkah. One day before Tarwiyah, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and delivered a sermon to the people (explaining the rulings of Hajj). When he finished, Sayyiduna ‘Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up. He recited Surah Tawbah and completed it in full. Then we set out with them, until when the day of ‘Arafah came, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and delivered a sermon to the people, teaching them the rites of Hajj. When he finished, Sayyiduna ‘Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and recited Surah Tawbah before the people until he completed it. Then when the day of sacrifice came and we returned, when Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) returned, he delivered a sermon to the people, informing them about returning, about sacrifice, and about other rites. When he finished, Sayyiduna ‘Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and recited Surah Bara’ah before the people until he completed it. When the day of the first departure came, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and delivered a sermon to the people. He informed the people how they should depart and how they should perform the stoning (rami). He taught the people the rites of Hajj. When he finished, Sayyiduna ‘Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and recited Surah Tawbah before the people until he completed its recitation.
