Ubaidullah bin Abdullah narrates: I went to the service of Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her). I said to her: Will you not tell me about the illness of the Prophet (peace be upon him)? She said: Yes, the Prophet (peace be upon him) fell ill. He asked: Have the people performed the prayer? I replied: No. O Messenger of Allah, they are waiting for you. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Place water for me in a large vessel. We did so, and the Prophet (peace be upon him) performed ghusl (ritual bath). Then, when he tried to get up, he fainted. When he regained consciousness, he asked: Have the people performed the prayer? We replied: No, O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)! They are waiting for you. Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: At that time, the people were sitting in the mosque waiting for the Prophet (peace be upon him) for the Isha prayer. Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: The Prophet (peace be upon him) sent a person to Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) to tell him to lead the people in prayer. The messenger came to him and said: The Prophet (peace be upon him) commands you to lead the people in prayer. Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), who was a soft-hearted and kind person, said: O Umar, you lead the people in prayer. Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: You are more deserving of this. So Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) did so. During those days, Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) continued to lead the people in prayer. Then, when the Prophet (peace be upon him) felt some improvement in his condition, he went out walking between two men. One of them was Abbas bin Abdul Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him). At that time, Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) was leading the people in prayer. When Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) saw the Prophet (peace be upon him), he began to step back, but the Prophet (peace be upon him) signaled to him not to step back. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said to those two men: Seat me beside Abu Bakr. So they seated the Prophet (peace be upon him) beside Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him).
Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: Then Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) began to pray following the prayer of the Prophet (peace be upon him), while Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) was standing, and the people prayed following the prayer of Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), and the Prophet (peace be upon him) was seated. The narrator named Ubaidullah says: I went to the service of Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), and I said to him: Shall I not narrate to you the hadith that Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) told me about the illness of the Prophet (peace be upon him)? He replied: Yes. So I narrated to him the hadith that Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) had narrated about the illness of the Prophet (peace be upon him). He did not deny any part of it, but he said: Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) did not mention to you the name of the other person who was with Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him). I replied: No. So Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: He was Ali (may Allah be pleased with him).
