Abdur Rahman bin Jubair narrates from his father: One day we were sitting with Sayyiduna Miqdad bin Aswad. A man passed by them and said: Blessed are those two eyes that saw the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). By Allah! We wish that we had also seen those whom you saw, and that we had been with those with whom you were. At this, he became angry. I was very surprised at this because the man had said something good. Sayyiduna Miqdad bin Aswad turned towards the man and said: What compels a person to wish for a situation which Allah Almighty has kept hidden from him? This person does not know what his condition would have been if he had been present with the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). By Allah! Some people were with the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), but Allah Almighty will throw them into Hell on their nostrils. These are the people who did not accept the invitation of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), nor did they affirm him. Do you not praise Allah Almighty for the fact that when He created you, you recognized your Lord? You affirm what your Prophet brought, and other people besides you were put to trial. By Allah! When the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was sent, no prophet was sent in such a severe situation as he was. There had been a gap between the coming of the prophets. It was the time of ignorance; people thought that there was no better religion than worshipping idols. Then came the differentiating (Book or Islam) which distinguished between truth and falsehood. It separated a father from his children, to the extent that a person considered his child or his father or his brother to be a disbeliever, but Allah Almighty had opened his heart to faith. He knew that if his close relative perished, he would go to Hell. His eyes did not find comfort in this, even though he knew that his beloved would go to Hell. This is the thing about which Allah Almighty has said: "Those who say, 'Our Lord, grant us comfort in our wives and our offspring.'"
