Imam Sha’bi narrates: I asked Alqamah bin Qais, “Was Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) with the Prophet (peace be upon him) on the night when he met the jinn?” Alqamah replied: I asked Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) this question: “Was any of you (i.e., the companions) with the Prophet (peace be upon him) when he met the jinn?” He replied: “No.” One night we were with the Prophet (peace be upon him). We found him absent, so we spent that night in the worst state. Near morning, the Prophet (peace be upon him) came from the direction of the Cave of Hira. He said: “A messenger from the jinn came to me, so I went with him. I recited the Qur’an before them.” Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) went and showed us the traces of the jinn’s fire and other things. Those jinn asked the Prophet (peace be upon him) about provisions for the journey. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Every food upon which Allah’s name has been mentioned—every bone that comes into your hand will have more meat on it than before, and every dung will be fodder for your animals.”
(The narrator states) The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Do not use these two things for istinja (cleaning after relieving oneself), for they are the food of your jinn brothers.”
