أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْجُنَيْدِ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي الْمَلِيحِ ، عَنْ عَوْفِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ الأَشْجَعِيِّ ، قَالَ : عَرَّسَ بِنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ذَاتَ لَيْلَةٍ ، فَافْتَرَشَ كُلُّ رَجُلٍ مِنَّا ذِرَاعَ رَاحِلَتِهِ ، فَانْتَبَهْتُ فِي بَعْضِ اللَّيْلِ ، فَإِِذَا نَاقَةُ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَيْسَ قُدَّامَهَا أَحَدٌ ، فَانْطَلَقْتُ أَطْلُبُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَإِِذَا مُعَاذُ بْنُ جَبَلٍ ، وَعَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ قَيْسٍ قَائِمَانِ ، قَالَ : قُلْتُ : أَيْنَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ؟ قَالا : مَا نَدْرِي ، غَيْرَ أَنَّا سَمِعْنَا صَوْتًا بِأَعْلَى الْوَادِي ، فَإِِذَا مِثْلُ هَدِيرِ الرَّحَى ، فَلَمْ نَلْبَثْ إِِلا يَسِيرًا حَتَّى أَتَانَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ : " إِِنَّهُ أَتَانِي اللَّيْلَةَ آتٍ مِنْ رَبِّي ، فَخَيَّرَنِي بَيْنَ أَنْ يَدْخُلَ نِصْفُ أُمَّتِي الْجَنَّةَ وَبَيْنَ الشَّفَاعَةِ ، وَإِِنِّي اخْتَرْتُ الشَّفَاعَةَ " ، فَقُلْنَا : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، نَنْشُدُكَ اللَّهَ وَالصُّحْبَةَ لَمَا جَعَلْتَنَا مِنْ أَهْلِ شَفَاعَتِكَ ، قَالَ : " فَإِِنَّكُمْ مِنْ أَهْلِ شَفَاعَتِي " ، قَالَ : فَأَقْبَلْنَا إِِلَى النَّاسِ ، فَإِِذَا هُمْ فَزِعُوا ، وَفَقَدُوا نَبِيَّهُمْ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِِنَّهُ أَتَانِيَ اللَّيْلَةَ آتٍ ، فَخَيَّرَنِي بَيْنَ أَنْ يَدْخُلَ نِصْفُ أُمَّتِي الْجَنَّةَ وَبَيْنَ الشَّفَاعَةِ ، وَإِِنِّي اخْتَرْتُ الشَّفَاعَةَ " ، فَقَالُوا : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، نَنْشُدُكَ اللَّهَ لَمَا جَعَلْتَنَا مِنْ أَهْلِ شَفَاعَتِكَ ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ : " إِِنِّي أُشْهِدُ مَنْ حَضَرَ أَنَّ شَفَاعَتِيَ لِمَنْ مَاتَ لا يُشْرِكُ بِاللَّهِ شَيْئًا مِنْ أُمَّتِي " .
Sayyiduna Awf bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: One night the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) camped with us, and everyone made their riding animals sit down. In a part of the night, I woke up and saw that there was no one in front of the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) she-camel (i.e., the Prophet was not present). I set out to search for the Prophet (peace be upon him), and I saw Sayyiduna Mu’adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Qais (may Allah be pleased with him) standing. I asked: Where is the Messenger of Allah? They replied: We do not know, but we heard a sound from the upper part of the valley, like the sound of a millstone turning. The narrator says, after a short while, the Prophet (peace be upon him) came to us. He (peace be upon him) said: A messenger from my Lord came to me. He gave me the choice, either half of my Ummah would enter Paradise or I would intercede (no matter how many people it may be), so I chose intercession. We said: O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)! We beseech you by Allah and by our companionship with you, include us among those who will receive your intercession. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: You are among those who will receive my intercession. The narrator says: Then we went to the people, and they were anxious. They had found the Prophet (peace be upon him) absent. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: That night a messenger from my Lord came to me, and he gave me the choice that either half of my Ummah would enter Paradise or I would choose intercession, so I chose intercession. The people said: We beseech you by Allah, include us among those who will receive your intercession. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: I make all those present witnesses that my intercession will be granted to every member of my Ummah who dies in such a state that he does not associate anyone with Allah.
