أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو يَعْلَى ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو خَيْثَمَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا إِِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ إِِبْرَاهِيمَ ، عَنْ دَاوُدَ بْنِ أَبِي هِنْدَ ، عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ ، عَنْ عَلْقَمَةَ ، قَالَ : قُلْتُ لابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ : هَلْ صَحِبَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَيْلَةَ الْجِنِّ مِنْكُمْ أَحَدٌ ؟ ، فَقَالَ : مَا صَحِبَهُ مِنَّا أَحَدٌ ، وَلَكِنَّا فَقَدْنَاهُ ذَاتَ لَيْلَةٍ بِمَكَّةَ ، فَقُلْنَا : اغْتِيلَ أَوِ اسْتُطِيرَ ، فَبِتْنَا بِشَرِّ لَيْلَةٍ بَاتَ بِهَا قَوْمٌ ، فَلَمَّا كَانَ مِنَ السَّحَرِ ، أَوْ قَالَ : فِي الصُّبْحِ ، إِِذَا نَحْنُ بِهِ يَجِيءُ مِنْ قِبَلِ حِرَاءَ ، فَقُلْنَا : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، فَذَكَرْنَا لَهُ الَّذِي كَانُوا فِيهِ ، فَقَالَ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِِنَّهُ أَتَانِي دَاعِيَ الْجِنِّ ، فَأَتَيْتُهُمْ ، فَقَرَأْتُ عَلَيْهِمْ " ، فَانْطَلَقَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَأَرَانَا آثَارَهُمْ ، وَآثَارَ نِيرَانِهِمْ .
Alqamah narrates: I asked Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him), “Was any one of you with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on the night he met the jinn?” He replied, “None of us was with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). One night, we found the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) absent in Makkah, so we thought perhaps he had been deceived (martyred) or harmed. We spent that night in a state worse than any people have ever spent a night. When the time of sahar (pre-dawn) came (the narrator is unsure, perhaps these are the words), or when morning came, we were still in that state when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came from the direction of Hira mountain. We said, ‘O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)!’ Then we mentioned to him the state we had been in. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, ‘A representative of the jinn came to me, so I went with them and recited (the Qur’an) before them.’ (The narrator says) Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went with us and showed us the traces of those jinn and their fire.”
