Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The people before you were destroyed because of their excessive (unnecessary) questioning of their prophets and their disagreements. So whatever you ask me about, I will tell you about it." Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Hudhafah stood up and asked: "O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)! Who is my father?" The Prophet (peace be upon him) replied: "Your father is Hudhafah." He went back to his mother. His mother said to him: "Why did you do that? We belonged to the time of ignorance and used to do bad deeds (but that does not mean you should ask such questions)." He said: "I had to find out about this so that I would know who my father is." The narrator says: There was an element of humor in his temperament.
