Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Sayyiduna Musa (peace be upon him) asked his Lord about six things, thinking that these were specific to him, while he did not like the seventh thing. He asked: O my Lord, who among Your servants is the most pious? Allah Almighty said: The one who remembers (Me) and does not forget. Sayyiduna Musa (peace be upon him) asked: Who among Your servants is the most guided? Allah Almighty said: The one who follows guidance. Sayyiduna Musa (peace be upon him) asked: Who among Your servants is the best judge? Allah Almighty said: The one who gives the same judgment for people as he gives for himself. Sayyiduna Musa (peace be upon him) asked: Who among Your servants has the most knowledge? Allah Almighty said: The scholar who is not satiated with knowledge and gathers the knowledge of people along with his own knowledge. Sayyiduna Musa (peace be upon him) asked: Who among Your servants is the strongest? Allah Almighty said: The one who forgives when he has the power (to take revenge). Sayyiduna Musa (peace be upon him) asked: Who among Your servants is the most prosperous? Allah Almighty said: The one who is content with what he has been given. Sayyiduna Musa (peace be upon him) asked: Who among Your servants is the poorest? Allah Almighty said: The one who has been given little.” The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Prosperity is not in possessions, rather prosperity is the richness of the heart. When Allah Almighty intends good for a servant, He places prosperity in his heart and instills piety in his heart. When Allah Almighty intends evil for a servant, He places poverty before his eyes.
(Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) The meaning of the words of the narrator “the one who is deficient” is the one whose condition is lacking, who considers what he has been given as little and desires more.
