Hadith 6159

أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ قُتَيْبَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي السَّرِيِّ ، حَدَّثَنَا مُعْتَمِرُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ ، حَدَّثَنَا إِِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ أَبِي خَالِدٍ ، عَنْ قَيْسِ بْنِ أَبِي حَازِمٍ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ الْمُسْتَوْرِدَ أَخَا بَنِي فِهْرٍ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، يَقُولُ : " مَا الدُّنْيَا فِي الآخِرَةِ إِِلا كَمَا يَضَعُ أَحَدُكُمْ أُصْبُعَهُ السَّبَّابَةَ فِي الْيَمِّ ، فَلْيَنْظُرْ بِمَ يَرْجِعُ ؟ " .
Mistawrid, who belonged to Banu Fihr, narrates: I heard the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) say, "The example of this world in comparison to the Hereafter is like that of a person who dips his forefinger into the sea and then examines what it returns with (i.e., how much water it brings back)."
