Abu Sa’ib narrates: I was present in the service of Sayyiduna Abu Sa’id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him). I was sitting with him when I heard the sound of something moving under his bed. I checked, and there was a snake. Sayyiduna Abu Sa’id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) asked, “What happened to you?” I said, “There is a snake here.” He asked, “What do you intend to do?” I replied, “I want to kill it.” So Sayyiduna Abu Sa’id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) pointed towards a house in that neighborhood which I could see. He said, “My cousin used to live in that house. During the Battle of Ahzab, he sought permission to go to his house as he had recently gotten married. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) granted him permission and instructed him to take his weapon with him. When he came to his neighborhood, he found his wife standing at the door of the house. He pointed his spear towards the woman. The woman said, ‘Do not be hasty about me; first find out why I have come out.’ The man went inside the house and found a strange and unusual snake there. He killed the snake with his spear and then brought it out, impaled on the spear. The snake was still moving. Sayyiduna Abu Sa’id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I do not know which of the two died first—the man or the snake. The people of his tribe came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, pray to Allah to return our companion to us.’ The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, ‘Pray for forgiveness for your companion.’ Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘Some jinn live in Madinah who have accepted Islam. When you see any of them, warn them three times. If it appears before you after that, then kill it. After warning it three times, then kill it.’
