Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: One of the Ansari companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) told me that once they were sitting with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when suddenly a star fell and a flash of light appeared. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked them, "When such a star used to fall, what did you people think in the days of ignorance?" The people replied, "We used to say that tonight a great man will be born or a great man will die." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "They do not fall because of anyone's death or birth, but when our Lord decrees a matter, the angels who carry the Throne glorify Him, then the angels who are next to them glorify Him, until this glorification reaches the lowest heaven. The angels who are near the Throne (i.e., the angels of the seventh heaven) ask, 'What has our Lord said?' So (the angels carrying the Throne) inform them about it. In the same way, all the angels of the heavens inform those of the heaven below them, until this matter reaches the lowest heaven. Then a jinn snatches it and conveys it to his friends, and he mixes it with something else. So when (something a soothsayer says) turns out to be true, it is because of that truth, but they add many lies to it (that is why many of their statements also turn out to be false)."
Here, the narrator named Mubashir is in doubt; perhaps these are the words: "They add to this matter."
