Kuraib Kindi narrates: Sayyiduna Imam Zain ul Abideen (may Allah be pleased with him) took my hand and we went to an elderly man from the Quraysh whose name was Ibn Abu Hathmah. He was performing prayer facing a pillar. We sat beside him. When he saw Imam Zain ul Abideen, he finished his prayer and came to him. Imam Zain ul Abideen said to him: Please narrate to us the report your mother transmitted regarding ruqyah (spiritual healing). He said: My mother told me that she used to perform ruqyah in the time of ignorance. When Islam came, she said: I will not perform ruqyah until I seek permission from the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). She went to the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and sought permission from him. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said to her: Perform ruqyah, as long as there are no words of shirk (polytheism) in it.
