Sayyida Umm Qais bint Mihsan (may Allah be pleased with her), who was among the early women who migrated and who had the honor of pledging allegiance at the blessed hand of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), and who is the sister of Sayyiduna ‘Ukkasha bin Mihsan (may Allah be pleased with him), narrates: She brought her son, who would not eat anything, to the service of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Because of the child’s throat ailment, the woman had pressed his throat. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: Why do you cause pain to your children by pressing their throats in this way? Use Indian aloeswood (the narrator says: by this is meant “costus”), for in it there are seven types of healing (i.e., it is a cure for seven diseases), one of which is pleurisy (pneumonia).
(Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) By “costus” is meant “qist.” This has been stated by the Shaykh.
