Abdullah bin Samit narrates: Sayyiduna Abu Dharr Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) came from Syria to meet Sayyiduna Uthman Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him). He said: O Leader of the Believers, open the door so that people may come in. Are you preventing me from those people who will recite the Qur'an, but it will not go below their throats, and they will go out of the religion just as an arrow passes through its target, and they will not return to it until the arrow returns to the bow. These will be the worst individuals among all creation. By the One in Whose hand is my soul, if you order me to sit, I will not remain standing, and if you order me to stand, I will stand as long as my feet support me, and if you tie me to a camel, I will not try to untie myself until you untie me yourself. Then Sayyiduna Abu Dharr Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) sought permission from Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) to go to Rabdha, so Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) granted him permission. He went there, and there a slave used to lead the people in prayer. The people said: Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him), but the slave lowered his head. Sayyiduna Abu Dharr Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) was told: Please step forward (and lead the prayer), so Sayyiduna Abu Dharr Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) said: My beloved Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) advised me of three things: that I should obey and follow, even if the ruler is an Abyssinian whose nose and ears are cut off; secondly, that when I make broth, I should add more water to it and then see which of my neighbors I can send it to; and (thirdly) to perform the prayer at its specified time. Then if you come to the Imam and he has already prayed before you, then you have preserved your prayer, otherwise this prayer will be counted as voluntary for you.
