Sayyiduna Jarir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: On the occasion of the Farewell Hajj, the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) made the people quiet, then he said: "Do not become disbelievers after me, striking the necks of one another."
(Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says: (The statement of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him): "Do not become disbelievers after me" — by this, that disbelief is not meant by which a person leaves Islam, rather the meaning of this narration is that when a thing has different parts, then the name of the whole thing can be applied to some of its parts. Just as Islam has different branches, so the term Islam can be applied to a person who commits one of its branches; it is not necessary that it be applied only to the whole. Similarly, the term disbelief can be applied to someone who abandons one branch of Islam; it is not necessary that it be applied only to one who abandons the whole of Islam. So, there are some prerequisites for Islam and disbelief. The parts of Islam will only be accepted from the one who fulfills these prerequisites, and from the ruling of Islam, only that person will be excluded who commits any one part of disbelief, except for the one who fulfills the prerequisites of disbelief, and they are affirmation, knowledge, denial, and disobedience.)
