Sayyiduna ‘Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I said, “O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! I release my trained dog and it restrains the game for me, and I also mention the name of Allah over it (so what is the ruling on this)?” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “When you release your trained dog and mention the name of Allah over it, then eat (of what it catches for you).” I said, “Even if it kills the game?” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Even if it kills it, as long as there is no other dog with it that was not among them.” I said to you (peace and blessings be upon him): “Sometimes I shoot an arrow and it strikes the game.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “If you shoot your arrow in such a way that it pierces (the animal), then eat it. But if it strikes it with the broad side (and the animal dies from the blow), then do not eat it.”
