Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We were present in the gathering of Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) when Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) arrived holding a staff in his hand and stood there. He said: I ask you by Allah, has any one of you heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say this: Permission should be sought three times; if you are granted permission, then fine, otherwise return. Sayyiduna Ubayy (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: What happened? Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: Yesterday evening, I sought permission three times to enter upon Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), but I was not granted permission, so I returned. Then I presented myself to him. When I came to him, I informed him: Yesterday evening I came to you, I greeted three times, then I returned. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We heard your voice, but we were busy at that time. If you had kept seeking permission until you were granted permission (that would have been appropriate). Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I sought permission in the manner I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) instruct. Upon this, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: By Allah, either you bring a witness regarding this matter or we will impose punishment on your back. The narrator says: Then Sayyiduna Ubayy (may Allah be pleased with him) said: By Allah, the person who is youngest among us will go with you. O Abu Sa'id, you stand up. The narrator says: So I stood up and went to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and informed him: I too heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say this.
