Hadith 5770

أَخْبَرَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ سُفْيَانَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ الْحَجَّاجِ السَّامِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ ، عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحَكَمِ ، عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ أَبِي رَبَاحٍ ، أَنَّ رَجُلا مَدَحَ رَجُلا عِنْدَ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ، فَجَعَلَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ يَرْفَعُ التُّرَابَ نَحْوَهُ ، وَقَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِذَا رَأَيْتُمُ الْمَدَّاحِينَ فَاحْثُوا فِي وجُوهِهُمُ التُّرَابَ " .
Ata bin Abi Rabah narrates: A person praised another person in the presence of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), so Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) started throwing dust towards him and explained that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "When you see those who praise others, throw dust on their faces."
