Hadith 5758

أَخْبَرَنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْهَمَذَانِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا بُنْدَارٌ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ ، عَنِ الْعَلاءِ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ : " أَتَدْرُونَ مَا الْغِيبَةُ ؟ " قَالُوا : اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ ، قَالَ : " أَنْ تَذْكُرَ أَخَاكَ بِمَا لَيْسَ فِيهِ " ، قَالَ : أَرَأَيْتَ إِنْ كَانَ فِي أَخِي مَا ذَكَرْتُ ؟ قَالَ : " إِنْ كَانَ فِيهِ مَا ذَكَرْتَ فَقَدِ اغْتَبْتَهُ ، وَإِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ فِيهِ مَا ذَكَرْتَ فَقَدْ بَهَتَّهُ " .
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Do you know what backbiting is?” The people replied: “Allah and His Messenger know best.” The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “It is that you mention about your brother something which he dislikes.” (The people) said: “What is your opinion if that thing is actually present in my brother, which I have mentioned?” The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “If that thing is actually present in him which you have mentioned, then you have backbitten him, and if that thing is not present in him which you have mentioned, then you have slandered him.”
