Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: Two men who had come from the east stood up to deliver a sermon. Both of them spoke, then they both sat down. Then Sayyiduna Thabit bin Qais (may Allah be pleased with him), who was the orator of the Prophet (peace be upon him), stood up. He spoke, and the people liked his speech. Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) stood up and delivered a sermon. He (peace be upon him) said: O people! Speak according to common usage, for making speech lengthy and embellished is from Satan, and some eloquence is (like) magic.
