Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A person who has even a mustard seed's weight of arrogance in his heart will not enter Paradise, and a person who has even a mustard seed's weight of faith in his heart will not enter Hell."
(Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) This narration can have two meanings. One of them is what we have mentioned in one category: then, such a person will not enter Paradise who has in his heart arrogance equal to the weight of a mustard seed. By this, the higher level of Paradise is meant, where those people will enter who did not use to show arrogance. And the statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): That person will not enter Hell who has in his heart faith equal to a mustard seed, by this the lower part of Hell is meant, where those people will enter who are not Muslims.
The second meaning is this: No such person will enter Paradise at all who has in his heart arrogance equal to a mustard seed, and here arrogance means shirk (associating partners with Allah), because a polytheist will never enter Paradise at all. The statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): That person will not enter Hell who has in his heart faith equal to the weight of a mustard seed, by this you mean: not forever. In this way, both meanings become correct.
