Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Women do not have the right to walk in the middle of the road." The Shaykh explains: The statement of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him): "Women do not have the right to walk in the road," is literally an informative statement, but the real intent is to prohibit what is implied within it, and that is that women should not walk alongside men, because generally men walk in the middle of the road, so it is necessary for women to walk separately on the sides of the road so that they can avoid mingling with men.
