Lady Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: I and Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her) were present with the Prophet (peace be upon him). During this time, Ibn Umm Maktum came. He asked for permission to enter. This was after the command of hijab had been revealed. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Both of you get up. We said: He is blind, he cannot see us. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Are both of you blind? Will you not see him?
(Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) "Are you blind?" Here, literally, information is being sought, but through this, what is meant is to prohibit both women from looking at that man who is blind. In this is evidence that it is also forbidden for women to look at men, except for mahram men, whose ruling is different. And this prohibition is equal, whether those men are blind or sighted.
