أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ قُتَيْبَةَ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي السَّرِيِّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا مُعْتَمِرٌ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ مَنْصُورَ بْنَ الْمُعْتَمِرِ ، يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ عُبَيْدَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي الْبَرَاءُ بْنُ عَازِبٍ ، قَالَ : قَالَ نَبِيُّ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِذَا أَخَذْتَ مَضْجَعَكَ ، فَتَوَضَّأْ وُضُوءَكَ لِلصَّلاةِ ، ثُمَّ اضْطَجِعْ عَلَى شِقِّكَ الأَيْمَنِ ، ثُمَّ قُلِ : اللَّهُمَّ أَسْلَمْتُ وَجْهِي إِلَيْكَ ، وَفَوَّضْتُ أَمْرِي إِلَيْكَ ، وَأَلْجَأْتُ ظَهْرِي إِلَيْكَ ، رَغْبَةً وَرَهْبَةً إِلَيْكَ ، لا مَلْجَأَ وَلا مَنْجَا مِنْكَ إِلا إِلَيْكَ ، آمَنْتُ بِكِتَابِكَ الَّذِي أَنْزَلْتَ ، وَبِنَبِيِّكَ الَّذِي أَرْسَلْتَ ، وَاجْعَلْهُ آخِرَ مَا تَقُولُ ، فَإِنْ مِتَّ مِتَّ عَلَى الْفِطْرَةِ ، فَقُلْتُ : أَسْتَذْكِرُهُنَّ ، وَبِرَسُولِكَ الَّذِي أَرْسَلْتَ ؟ فَقَالَ : وَبِنَبِيِّكَ الَّذِي أَرْسَلْتَ " .
Sayyiduna Bara’ bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When you go to bed, perform ablution as you do for prayer, then lie down on your right side and then recite this: “O Allah! I have submitted my face to You, and I have entrusted my affair to You. I have relied upon You, desiring and fearing (You). There is no refuge and no escape from You except to You. I believe in Your Book which You have revealed and in Your Prophet whom You have sent.” (The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:) Make these words your last words (before sleep). If you die that night, you will die upon the natural disposition (i.e., the religion of Islam). Sayyiduna Bara’ (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: While memorizing them, I recited “I believe in Your Messenger” instead of “I believe in Your Prophet,” so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: (Recite this:) “I believe in Your Prophet whom You have sent.”
