Ibn Hibban

Alqamah narrates: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) reported this. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed the woman who tattoos and the one who gets tattooed, the woman who plucks hair and the woman who creates gaps between her teeth for beauty, those who alter Allah’s creation. The narrator states: This information reached a woman from the tribe of Banu Asad, Umm Ya’qub, who was a scholar of the Qur’an. She came to Sayyiduna Abdullah. She said: I have come to know that you curse the woman who tattoos and the one who gets tattooed, the woman who plucks hair and the woman who creates gaps between her teeth for beauty, those who alter Allah’s creation. Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Why should I not curse the one whom the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed, and this command is also in the Book of Allah. The woman said: I have read the entire Qur’an. I did not find this command in it. Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: By Allah, if you had truly read it, you would have found it in it. Then he recited this verse: “Whatever the Messenger gives you, take it, and whatever he forbids you, abstain from it.” The woman said: I have seen some of these things in one of your wives. So Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Go and check. The woman went to the house of Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him), but she did not see anything like that. Then she came back to Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him). She said: I did not see anything like that. So Sayyiduna Abdullah said: If it had been so (i.e., if my wife had done such a thing), I would not have stayed with her.
